Case Study 3 · Lumen Language School

Duration: 30 min

Warm-up

Warm-up · Prime the case (5 min, solo)

Two quick drills that use language from Unit 3: (A) a 5-line email, and (B) an indirect question you would use on a call.

Drill 1 — 5-line email

You are Diana, director of a small language school. A corporate client (Bank X) has just asked, by email, whether you can start a 20-person B1 group in 3 weeks. Write your 5-line reply.

  1. Subject line:

  2. Line 1 (greeting):

  3. Line 2 (context, 1 sentence):

  4. Line 3 (the ask):

  5. Line 4 (deadline for you):

  6. Line 5 (close):

Drill 2 — Indirect question for the discovery call

Rewrite each direct question as a polite indirect one you would use on the discovery call with Bank X.

  1. What is your budget per student?

  2. How many hours per week do they want?

  3. Is online OK, or does it have to be in person?

Bridge to the case → Two moves the case will demand: (a) a clean 5-line reply that buys Diana time without losing the deal; (b) a polite discovery call where indirect questions unlock the real needs (budget, format, decision-maker).
