Exercise 5

7. Listening — 'Have you ever …?'

Three people answer the same life-so-far questions. Notice how they open in present perfect and then switch to past simple for the specific memory.

  1. Speaker 1: how many countries has this speaker lived in, and which specific years in Dublin?
  2. Speaker 2: what changed their view of themselves, and what had they told themselves before?
  3. Speaker 3: what has this speaker NEVER done, and how do they feel about it?
Show transcript

Speaker 1:Yes, I have — I've lived in three countries. I lived in Dublin from 2016 to 2018, then in a small town in Germany for a year, and in São Paulo for eight months. But I've lived in three countries and only one really lived in me. Dublin changed how I think; the other two were addresses. I moved back when my grandmother got sick.

Speaker 2:I ran a half-marathon in 2022, after saying for six years that 'I'm not a runner'. When I finished, I realised I hadn't been physically incapable — I just hadn't decided to be someone who runs. I've done a few things since then that I used to think weren't for me, and most of them turned out to be perfectly for me.

Speaker 3:No, I haven't. I've never learned to drive. I tried twice — I failed the test in 2011 and again in 2013 — and after the second time I quietly decided some people aren't meant to be behind a wheel. It's a peaceful never, not a sad one.

8. Writing — Life-so-far bio

Write 100–120 words as a 'life-so-far bio'. Include: (a) at least SIX present perfect sentences (with ever, never, or a plain 'I've done…'), (b) at least THREE past simple sentences with a specific detail (a year, a place, an event), (c) at least ONE 'been to' vs. 'gone to' contrast, (d) at least ONE 'I've never … and probably never will' honest sentence. End with ONE reflective sentence about which experience has shaped you the most.

Answer this in your digital notebook or class paper.
