Exercise 5

7. Listening — 'Plenty of everything, hardly any dinner'

Three people talk about their fridge and food habits. Listen for the quantifiers they use naturally.

  1. Speaker 1: what does he find in his fridge on a typical Wednesday?
  2. Speaker 2: what three habits cut her food waste, and by how much?
  3. Speaker 3: what paradox does he describe about modern kitchens?
Show transcript

Speaker 1:My fridge on a Wednesday is a personality test I fail every week. Plenty of ingredients, three or four yoghurt brands, a great deal of good will on Sunday — and hardly any dinner by Thursday. Most of it moves quietly from the middle shelf to the compost.

Speaker 2:I used to throw out about a third of what I bought. Then I tried three very boring habits: a written weekly plan, an 'eat me first' shelf, and no shopping after eight. Within two months my waste dropped to under fifteen per cent. Boring — and that's exactly why it works.

Speaker 3:We have loads of information and hardly any time. I've read several long articles about fermentation this year and haven't fermented a single thing. My grandmother had very little information and cooked three proper meals a day for forty years. Something's off.

  2. The 'three habits' (weekly plan, 'eat me first' shelf, no shopping after 8 p.m.) cut waste by half. Which would actually work in your life, and why?
